The Jerez-based luthier David Peña Vargas has, in a relatively short time, established himself as one of the most notable figures among the new generation of flamenco guitar makers. His instruments successfully combine the traditional craftsmanship of the trade with features adapted to the needs of today’s guitarist. It is therefore no surprise that renowned flamenco players such as Diego del Morao, Antonio Rey, and Manuel Valencia have chosen his guitars both for the stage and for recordings.

Among his models, the Fusion stands out as a design that preserves the traditional essence of the flamenco guitar while incorporating contemporary elements aimed at the modern performer. In particular, the version with cutaway and Spanish cypress for back and sides is especially appealing for players seeking greater technical freedom without sacrificing the authentic flamenco sound.

The cutaway allows easier access to the upper registers of the fingerboard, which is particularly useful for modern repertoire and in fusion or concert settings. At the same time, the instrument retains a distinctly flamenco response: quick attack, strong projection, and remarkable clarity in rasgueado and picado techniques. The cypress provides that traditional “blanca” character—light, bright, and very direct—allowing the guitar to respond quickly to the right hand.

From an aesthetic point of view, the Fusion model maintains an elegant and understated style: handcrafted rosettes, carefully executed finishes, and a clean construction that reflects the Andalusian guitar-making tradition.

Overall, Peña Vargas guitars represent a compelling synthesis of flamenco tradition and contemporary design. The Fusion model with cutaway and Spanish cypress demonstrates that it is possible to expand the instrument’s technical possibilities without losing the sonic character that defines the Andalusian school of flamenco guitar. In short, it is a guitar conceived for the modern player who seeks versatility, power, and authentic flamenco character in a single instrument.
